Since few of us are capable of writing a Torah scroll, sefer Torah, ourselves we can fulfill the mitzvah by commissioning a sofer to write one on our behalf.

We offer new, completed Torah scrolls or you can order a Torah scroll that is in the midst of being written or commission one of our expert sofrim to write a Torah scroll especially for you. A Torah scroll from scratch generally takes 1 to 1-1/2 years to complete.

The advantage of commissioning a Torah scroll is that it can be paid for in installments throughout the writing. In addition, a commissioned Torah scroll will most likely be less expensive than a Torah scroll of comparable quality that is already completed or in the midst of being written.

Please note that the standard size Torah scrolls for Ashkenazic Torah scrolls are 17-1/2 and 19 inches (45/48cm). The standard size, Sephardic Torah scrolls are 20 and 22 inches (50/56cm). Torah scrolls are available in smaller sizes but since this is generally not standard there will be less options to choose from and may be more costly.
If weight is a concern then the 17-1/2 inch/45cm Torah scroll should be fine. Bear in mind that you gain in ease of lifting and carrying with a Torah scroll smaller that this but may make the reading/viewer somewhat more difficult for the reader person called to the Torah. We suggest a standard size Torah scroll unless you are restricted by space or the Torah scroll will be transported frequently or if the congregation is elderly.

Each Torah scroll is written by a qualified sofer on high quality, beautiful parchment. Two experienced examiners manually examine the writing. In addition, the Torah scroll is computer checked for textual errors. All mistakes are corrected and the sections are professionally sewn together as required by halachah.
